The runner is in fact a fragment that was once part of a border from a classic and probably very large 'Ziegler' carpet. These carpets are famed for harmony, colour balance and scaled up designs, all of which, are quite apparent in our example. The name Ziegler these days being peddled to describe mass production goods that share little or no ethos or resemblance to the original.
Ziegler & Co. was a Manchester-based Anglo-Swiss producer and distributor of carpets in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, being set up in the Arak region in 1870s. When difficulties arose in payments of silver for the imported 'Manchester' cotton fabrics, the notion of barter was arrived at to facilitate carpets as exchange goods.
This fragment has a rather interesting provenance, it once being the property of a Greek family in Constantinople (Istanbul) who were involved in the famous old London based OCM company, whose operational centre was Smyrna (Izmir) in the early 20th century.
